for novel experiment in re-inventing education from the ground up
Upon completion of my master's degree in 2015, I started the Manitou Movie School pilot project as a way to put theory into practice.
Thus I rented a physical location in my home town of Manitou Springs, bought and set up all the necessary equipment (i.e. projector, screen, and sound system), plastered a bunch of favorite movie posters all over the place, installed a few burgundy-red curtains on the windows and doors, and opened my laboratory school to the public.
To get the word out I displayed a sizable custom-made sign outside the school, which was on the main avenue of Manitou (great location!); and of course I spread the word to family and friends and everyone else I knew and ran into. I also started writing articles for a new paper in town called the Manitou Marquee, mostly essays about movies and cannabis, and always with a footnote reference to the Movie School.
