Text: Dialogue and the Art of Thinking Together by William Isaacs (1999)

Though not necessary for the first class meeting, this text is required reading for those who enroll in the full CCBS 420 course.
Description: At this think tank we throw in the big college words right from the start. And this academic gem represents the foundation of all education; that is, knowledge and its accumulation. Basically, this is the meaning and the practice of epistemology. It is all about asking: What do we know and how do we come to know it? That question is our mantra for this class, with one caveat. Here we use the subject of cannabis as the focus and foundation of our study in epistemology.

Highly interactive, this course is built around questions. How much do we know about cannabis? How big is our body of knowledge when it comes to an understanding of this plant and its effects on us? Immediately we can see this body is fairly large, and it's growing fast! Plus, and this is important, we must recognize that we are part of this growing body of knowledge, as both its intrepid investigators, and its enthusiastic (and hopefully well-informed) subjects. This is where things get really interesting!

In this course we share our experience and expertise with cannabis, get a sense of the size and growth of our body of cannabis knowledge. In doing this we'll get to know the body's fuzzy boundaries, its various interconnected and overlapping parts, the different subjects and disciplines involved in the study of cannabis. Then we'll do what all curious seekers and adventurous learners must do; we'll ask, where do we go now? What do we want to learn next?

Things can get fairly deep as we dissect and study this body from fact to theory, from knowledge in which we can rest assured, to more fantastic ideas that require more testing and validation. But from start to finish we'll see it really boils down to relationship. So whether we're talking about raw statistics or bihemispheric resonance, the foundation of cannabis fitness rests upon us and our connectedness.
CCBS 420  Foundations of Cannabis Fitness: A Study in Epistemology from Fact to Theory
Instructor: Dean Frankmore

Notes: I'm really excited about getting into this course because it represents both a culmination and a beginning, a basic summary of my past research, as well as an indication of my present and future studies. The result is a unique mix of my training as a pharmacist, my experience as a 25-year consumer of cannabis, novel ideas expressed in my recently completed Master's thesis, and healthy gleanings from public presentations I've given on cannabis since retiring from pharmacy a few years back.

Then there is the interaction part of this course, the chance to meet others who are passionate about cannabis, to hear their experiences and perspectives. Both for scientific and humanistic reasons, one can only work in a vacuum for so long. As the description says, this course is really about relationships and connecting, sharing with others of similar inclinations and interests. Plus this course is a critical first step to manifesting Manitou Movie School and its vision of a healthy cannabis-friendly community, to creating the type of world we want to live in.

So more than anything, this course marks a new beginning. As I recently heard a woman say about her own situation, "It's time to get beyond the bullshit and move forward." Poetry aside, that's a good summation of the attitude of this CCBS 420 course and these first class gatherings. Don't be intimidated, turned-off, or misled by technical talk of epistemology and bihemispheric resonance. This course will be as fun as it is interesting and challenging. At least that's what I'm planning on. Most of all, we're here to connect and communicate, to discuss and share our ideas and understandings, to build community.

As for course format, the plan is to offer the first class of CCBS 420 on a number of different dates over the next couple months (dates and times are listed below). I would like to provide plenty of opportunity for folks to get involved. Then once a critical number have taken this first class and are interested in moving forward, the second class for CCBS 420 will begin a month later, and so on. Something like that anyway.
To simplify scheduling and save travel time, the first class of CCBS 420 is offered as a three-hour session that allows ample chance for presentation and discussion (and at least a couple of breaks!) Each session is limited to 24 heads. Current dates and times are as follows:
